The Wood Woman stems from a question: “How does a woman of all and none look like?”. Inside the frame of my MA thesis’ research on ‘Radical Femininity’ I conceived a new woman portrayed in painting and supported by a scenography-type wood structure. By combining the idea of woman as territory from the standpoint of icons and the realm of moving images—mostly evoking old Hollywood—and the woods, I decided to locate the painting and structure amidst a pine tree forest, working as a catalyst for estrangement through an act of almost miraculous apparition presented to potential passersby. The Wood Woman can still be found in the same location and without signature, making this an ongoing anonymous work subjected to continuous change.

Here are the chapters that conform the thesis’ book of The Wood Woman: Ouverture / Fulguration: Cinema is a face / Femininity in cinema / Woman as transformer / The hyperbolic and the colossization / Agency: How can a woman be in control of the portrayal of her image / Radical Femininity / Giving birth to a new woman / Behind the curtain / The Wood Woman
